City of Reno cancels 2022 Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games

Cancelled

City of Reno recently issued the following announcement.

Due to the latest regional, state and federal guidance related to COVID-19, the City of Reno’s Parks and Recreation department has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2022 Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games.

Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention: Among adults, the risk for severe illness from COVID-19 increases with age, with older adults at highest risk.

The CDC recommends that everyone, including fully vaccinated individuals, wear a mask in public indoor settings in counties with substantial or high transmission. Washoe County is currently in the high transmission category. Many of the planned Senior Winter Games activities were planned to take place indoors, making mask requirements and social distancing difficult to enforce.

The Games would have occurred in early 2022, but the announcement is being made early as the community is normally planning and registering for the event during this time. Unfortunately, the City of Reno has also had to cancel previous Senior Games out of abundance of caution due to COVID-19.

“Our top priority is the safety of participants and employees,” said Jaime Schroeder, City of Reno Parks and Recreation Director. “Unfortunately, it's just not prudent to hold this event at this time. We know our seniors very much look forward to the Senior Games, and we’re disappointed to have to cancel again. On a positive note, we’re still looking forward to putting on the Summer Games later next year, and our team is working to plan short outdoor recreational events in place of the Winter Games.”

The City of Reno would like to remind all age groups that other Health and Wellness programming is available, as City facilities and amenities are open, including pools. All individuals are required to wear a face covering (mask) unless they are actively swimming, or have an exemption outlined in Emergency Directive 024.
