Washoe County Parks Tests One-Year Off-Leash Pilot Program

Leash

Washoe County recently issued the following announcement.

Washoe County Parks & Open Space has opened three off-leash dog use areas on athletic fields during certain non-team times. This pilot program will expand the options for pet owners to let their dogs roam freely while testing the viability of multi-use soccer fields.

Certain soccer fields at North Valleys Regional Park, Lazy 5 Regional Park, and South Valleys Regional Park will be open to off-leash dog use for a one-year trial period, through November 2022. When teams are not using the fields, the hours will be 8 a.m. to sunset November through February, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays only, March through October.

Each field entrance has a dog-waste station, but users are encouraged to bring their own waste bags. These field are off-leash areas, not dog parks, and Washoe County asks users to pick up all dog waste on the fields and be respectful of the posted rules.

“We are happy to be able to add some more off-leash areas for our residents, and if the pilot program goes well, we are hopeful more off-leash fields can be added in the future,” Washoe County Park Ranger Celia Walker said.

Aggressive dogs are not allowed, and residents are legally responsible for their dog’s behavior and any injuries or damaged they may cause. Per Washoe County code, all dogs must be current with their vaccinations and licenses, and there may be no more than three dogs per handler. This pilot program may be discontinued if the rules are not followed and off-leash use of the fields creates more problems or damage than anticipated.
