The U.S. Conference of Mayors honors Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve’s efforts on climate action

Genbusiness006

City of Reno recently issued the following announcement.

The City of Reno is proud to announce Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve will be recognized for her efforts to address the climate crisis as part of the 2021 Mayors Climate Protection Awards. Schieve received an Honorable Mention in the Large City category for her leadership in enabling the City of Reno to be the first American city to pioneer real-time energy tracking and related emissions tracking to help curb climate change.

Beginning at 9 a.m. PST today, Mayor Schieve and 12 other U.S. mayors from the Large City category (cities of 100,000+ population) will be featured in a Zoom session to showcase their local climate initiatives. To register, see here.

In July 2021, the City launched real-time emissions tracking from fuel and energy use within the City’s operations in partnership with local company, Ledger8760. Through cutting-edge 24/7 emissions and greenhouse gas tracking technology, the City empowers organizations with both transparency and accuracy in environmental reporting, enabling organizations and municipalities to support sustainable operations, build resiliency, and make informed decisions to meet climate change goals.

“I want to thank the U.S. Conference of Mayors for recognizing the incredible sustainability efforts being done here in Reno,” said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve. “I am proud to uphold the goals put forth under the Paris Climate Agreement, and I truly believe the data we receive through our partnership with Ledger8760 will help pave the way for critical emissions reductions and a more sustainable City for years to come.”

“Our city-wide sustainability goal in Reno, aligned with the state of Nevada, is to reduce our annual greenhouse gas emissions by 28% from 2008 levels by 2025,” said Suzanne Groneman, Sustainability Program Manager at the Reno City Manager’s Office. “It is exciting to see Reno recognized on the national stage for the impressive strides we have made to achieve these goals through accurate and detailed data tracking provided by Ledger8760.”

Earlier this week, Ledger8760 and the City announced the launch of a regularly updated public dashboard for Reno residents and policy decision-makers to view, which is capable of capturing all three emissions scopes for carbon output from City buildings, public utilities, meters, vehicle fleets, and more. This platform allows the City to identify blind spots in emissions management and identify opportunities to make more sustainable choices.

“We congratulate Mayor Schieve and the entire team at the City of Reno for leading the way in carbon-tracking transparency,” said Adam Kramer, CEO of Ledger8760. “This prestigious honor stresses the importance of accurate data tracking to create a more sustainable and vibrant community, where residents are inspired to be more conscious of their own carbon footprints.”

This year’s mayors are the 15th class of winners to be honored for exemplary city programs that demonstrate how local climate action can reduce energy use and carbon emissions and protect local communities. These annual mayoral awards are made possible through a partnership between the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Walmart.
