Guidance on Masks/Face Coverings

129

Nevada State College recently issued the following announcement.

Dear Campus Community,

Governor Steve Sisolak announced today that Nevada will rescind the mask mandate, effective immediately. Public safety requires participation from all levels. As individuals, let us remain mindful to enter classrooms, office spaces, and communal areas with the utmost care for each other’s collective health and safety.

As stated in the Nevada System of Higher Education’s (NSHE) memo, “Individual NSHE institutions do not currently retain the authority to unilaterally impose more stringent face covering requirements beyond Nevada law. Stricter face covering requirements involve systemwide policy decisions that falls outside of a President’s discretion.”  It’s important to note that our on-campus student vaccination rate is 89%. This figure excludes students enrolled 100% online and high school students earning college credits (dual-credit students) as both groups attend Nevada State remotely. Our employee vaccination rate is over 95%.

Nevada State is an agent of social justice, and as a campus made up of the New Majority, it is especially important to persist in fostering a community which supports all students and employees. Let us remember that COVID-19 has a disproportionate impact on certain members of the Scorpion community, including our peers that are immunocompromised, without health insurance, and who live with or care for other individuals. While face coverings will no longer be required in public spaces, please be cognizant that COVID-19 is ongoing. Take into consideration your health and health of others when making a personal decision.

As we face the challenges of COVID-19, Nevada State College remains committed to ensuring a safe and healthy teaching, learning, and working environment for the Spring 2022 semester. I thank you for your support and assistance. As restrictions loosen, please continue to exercise caution and good judgment to limit the further spread of COVID-19. N95 masks are also available to all faculty, staff, and students at the Rogers Student Center front desk Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Vaccination is the best prevention method for keeping the Scorpion community as safe as possible. All Scorpions are invited to the Vaccine and Booster Clinic on February 17 in the Rogers Student Center Ballroom.

We will continue to share information specific to Nevada State through official channels, including nsc.edu/coronavirus/. The site contains current announcements and links to schedule a test, receive free home tests, download the State Safe App, and other important information.

Please join me and the Scorpion family to do our part to make our communities safer.

Be Well!

Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard

President
