Construction to begin soon at future site of Moana Springs Community Aquatics and Fitness Center

The Reno City Council approved a $12 million Owner-CMAR construction contract for phase one of the Moana Springs Community Aquatics and Fitness Center during its July 20, 2022 Regular Meeting. The public can get more information and track project updates at the new website, MoanaSprings.com.

The City’s funding plan for the Moana Springs Community Aquatic and Fitness Center includes a generous $9 million pledge from The William N. Pennington Foundation.

“We could not have done this without the support of The William N. Pennington Foundation,” Reno City Manager Doug Thornley said. “We are extremely grateful to the Pennington Foundation for their vision and financial assistance. We also owe a huge thanks to Sierra Nevada Community Aquatics for their dedication over the past decade in pursuing this project.”

Key project milestones are outlined below:

  • August 2022: Site work begins
  • August 10, 2022: Groundbreaking ceremony
  • Late 2022: Phase two Owner-CMAR construction contract presented to Council
  • Spring 2023: Building and pool construction begins
  • Summer 2024: Final completion
Moana Pool permanently closed in 2007. Since then, Sierra Nevada Community Aquatics (SNCA), a nonprofit, was formed with a mission to rebuild an aquatics facility and spearhead the Moana Springs Community Aquatic and Fitness Center design. Their focus and commitment has been essential.

“This is the City of Reno’s first major public pool project in almost three decades, and we couldn’t be more excited,” Reno City Councilmember Naomi Duerr said. “This facility is desperately needed to meet the recreational needs of our growing community, but it will also have a positive impact on the local economy by bringing out-of-town athletes and their families to the area for competitive swimming.”

CORE Construction (CORE) was selected as the Construction Manager At Risk (CMAR). City staff and CORE identified that separating the project into two phases increases the probability for completion by the target date of summer 2024. The first phase will include procurement of long lead construction materials and site civil improvements. The second phase will include the vertical construction of the pools and building.

The two-level facility, located at 240 West Moana Lane adjacent to the existing soccer fields, will include:

  • Indoor competition pool for swimming, water polo, and diving, measuring 50 meters by 25 yards. The pool is about 12,000 square feet.
  • Indoor multi-use pool for lessons and leisurely swimming. Includes a water slide, zero-depth entry, splash features, and a resistance pool measuring 60 feet by 60 feet. The pool is about 3,000 square feet.
  • Outdoor heated soaking pool for relaxing, measuring 58 feet by 17 feet and about 900 square feet.
  • Multi-purpose room for classes, birthday parties, and community meetings.
  • Locker rooms on the first floor.
  • Fitness Center on the second floor, measuring about 5,000 square feet.
