This September, Washoe County Library System is joining the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time to remind parents, caregivers, and students that a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.
Started in 1987 as a national campaign to help children obtain library cards, Library Card Sign-Up Month continues to mark the beginning of the school year in September. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.
“Libraries provide important opportunities for lifelong learning, and for students a free library card is a great way to set the tone for a successful school year,” says Library Director Jeff Scott. “We invite patrons of all ages to visit one of our 12 library locations in celebration of Library Card Sign-Up Month. A patron’s first library card really opens the door to utilizing free library services.”
At Washoe County Library System, patrons can find a variety of educational resources and activities, including online access to e-books, audiobooks, and magazines with the Libby app; online access to career help and skill building; research and homework help for K-12 and beyond; and expert reading recommendations with NoveList Plus.
In addition to online resources, the library system offers free events at each library location that focus on art, culture, STEAM, and educational enrichment.
