City Of Sparks To Choose New Fire Chief From Six Finalists

The City of Sparks has announced six finalists for its open fire chief position.

Since Chief Jim Reid announced his retirement in April 2022, the City has been actively recruiting for the new fire chief and retained the services of Ralph Andersen & Associates of Rocklin, California to assist in the search process.

The search went live July 6, 2022, and closed August 17, 2022. Thirty-two applications were received. The City thoroughly reviewed the candidates’ resumes and cover letters, viewed press coverage and conducted two rounds of interviews.

The six finalists will participate in a two-day assessment center and interview process on October 11 and 12 to compete for the position. Sparks City Manager Neil Krutz anticipates selecting the next Chief of the Sparks Fire Department at the completion of these in-person efforts.

The six finalists are listed below, including their current positions and tenures in the fire service.

  • Travis Anderson, Deputy Fire Chief for the North Las Vegas Fire Department, North Las Vegas, Nevada, 24 years in the fire service
  • Brett Jeremy Headman, Deputy Fire Chief for the Provo Fire Department, Provo, Utah, 27 years in the fire service
  • Kevin Jakubos, Battalion Chief for the Sparks Fire Department, Sparks, Nevada, 20 years in the fire service
  • Mark Lawson, Former Assistant Chief/Division Chief of Operations for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE) Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit, Merced, California, 32 years in the fire service
  • Mark Rohlfing, Assistant Fire Chief for the Bellevue Fire Department, Bellevue, Nebraska, 39 years in the fire service
  • Walt White, Fire Chief for the Amador Fire Protection District, Amador, California, 35 years in the fire service.

“I am excited to get a closer look at the candidates under the challenging circumstances we will create through the assessment center and interview process,” Krutz said. “I am confident the next Sparks Fire Chief will rise to the top of this group.” The group has a combined 177 years of experience in fire service.
