Sparks City Council Highlights September 12, 2022

The following are highlights from the September 12, 2022, Sparks City Council Meeting.

Announcements, Presentations, Recognition Items and Items of Special Interest:

  • Council proclaimed:
    • September 2022 as “Suicide Prevention Month: Creating Hope Through Action” and encouraged the community to share information about the new 988 crisis hotline connecting those experiencing a mental health, substance use, or suicide crisis with trained crisis counselors.
    • September 2022 as “Voter Registration Month,” encouraging eligible voters to register to vote by going to www.registertovogenv.gov, local election offices, state voter registration agencies or in-person registration on Election day.
    • September 18 through 24, 2022, as “Surgical Technologist Week” urging citizens to acknowledge the important role of surgical technologists in the care and recovery of their patients.
  • City Manager Neil Krutz announced a vacancy on the Sparks Parks and Recreation Commission for a partial term ending June 30, 2024.Members must be a resident of Spark or have a valid Sparks business license. Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2022, by going to www.cityofsparks.us/getinvolved.
General Business:

  • Council appointed Brett McElhaney as the structural/civil engineer and Matthew Myres as the mechanical/plumbing contractor representatives to the Sparks Building Code Board of Appeals, each for two-year terms ending September 30, 2024.

  • Council accepted a generous $10,000.00 donation from Corwin Ford Reno for the Sparks Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Proactive Engagement (H.O.P.E.) Team.

  • Council approved a $201,762.00 interlocal agreement between the City of Reno, on behalf of the Reno Police Department, Washoe County, on behalf of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, and the City of Sparks, on behalf of the Sparks Police Department, for the management and disposition of the 2022 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program Award from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance. The City of Sparks’ share is $40,352.40.
Public Hearing and Action Items Unrelated to Planning and Zoning:

  • Council held a public meeting and approved the Community Development Block Grant Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report for Program Year 2, Fiscal Year 2021-2022 for submittal to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Planning and Zoning Public Hearing and Action Items:

  • Council held a public meeting and adopted a bill to amend section 20.03.025 of the Sparks Municipal Code to allow drive-through windows at licensed marijuana dispensaries.
