The Sparks City Attorney’s Office has announced that Max Sugiu Crisostomo has been convicted of one count of Vehicular Manslaughter stemming from an incident that occurred on July 3, 2021. On July 3, 2021, Sparks Police Department officers responded to 450 Howard Drive on the report of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers found out that Crisostomo was driving southbound on Howard Drive and struck an elderly female who had been crossing the street. As a result of the collision, the elderly female suffered multiple blunt force injuries which was the cause of her death on July 25, 2021. The Major Accident Investigation Team of the Sparks Police Department investigated and submitted the case to the Sparks City Attorney’s Office to file charges on Crisostomo for Vehicular Manslaughter.
On March 14, 2022, Senior Assistant City Attorney Ana Swanson represented the City of Sparks at Crisostomo’s trial. At the conclusion of trial, the Honorable Shirle Eiting found Crisostomo guilty of Vehicular Manslaughter. During the sentencing phase, several of the victim’s family members made victim impact statements which were considered by the Judge. “This case involved a tragic loss of life, and I am proud of our prosecutors for delivering justice for the victim’s family. This case should also serve as a sorrowful reminder that negligence behind the wheel of a car can cost people their lives and shatter families. We all play a part in creating a safe community so please be careful when you are driving in our city.”
The Defendant was sentenced as follows: Crisostomo will serve 180 days in the Washoe County Jail suspended for 2 years, on the conditions that he be placed on house arrest for 90 days, that he complete the Victim Impact Panel, and that he obey all laws.
