Washoe County School District recently issued the following announcement.
The Washoe County School District (WCSD) joins with districts across the country in honoring the outstanding contributions of school bus drivers on National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. This celebration will take place on Wednesday, February 23.
Like many districts, WCSD continues to grapple with a crippling shortage of drivers and is aggressively recruiting drivers at job fairs, online, and through a variety of other means. The District applauds the hard work and dedication of WCSD’s bus drivers and employees who have stepped up to cover shifts and provide this service to students in the District.
“We deeply appreciate and honor our bus drivers who have worked long days to provide transportation services to our students,” said WCSD Superintendent Dr. Kristen McNeill. “They are often the first District employee our students see in the morning and the last employee they see before they go home, and they play an important role in the lives of our students. We are thankful for our current and former bus drivers who have worked double shifts and long hours, and who have shouldered many more duties to ensure our students arrive safely to and from school each day. In addition to our current staff of drivers, our mechanics, dispatchers, and former transportation employees have left their regular jobs to get behind the wheel of our buses and take responsibility for driving routes. We are grateful for their service to our students and families, today and always.”
“This school year has been challenging for our bus drivers,” said WCSD Director of Transportation Scott Lee. “They have adjusted to so many changes and extra demands, always keeping the welfare and well-being of our students as a top priority. I am grateful to work with such a dedicated group of professionals who bring our students to and from school safely each day.”
Due to staffing shortages this year, WCSD has instituted a number of measures in an effort to work within staffing levels including setting up “bus hubs” where students gather to catch buses in the morning and are dropped off in the afternoon, the temporary use of charter buses to transport students, and a rotation schedule for suspending bus service to a portion of the students in the District one area at a time.
