As part of our ongoing commitment to keep media partners and the community apprised of important issues in the Washoe County School District (WCSD), please see the information below regarding this week’s meeting of the WCSD Board of Trustees.
On the agenda:
After a presentation and discussion, the Board of Trustees selected “modernization of educational statutes” as the district’s Bill Draft Request (BDR) for the 2023 Nevada Legislative Session.
- Modernizing educational statutes is consistent with priorities previously identified by the Board to allow for innovation, strengthen alignment in the state education system and use public funding effectively to improve student- and school outcomes.
- These bonds will support rehabilitation and repair projects at existing schools including flooring, signage, painting and sealing of exteriors, replacement of fire alarm systems, roof replacement, plumbing system repairs, repaving and many other projects.
- The public had various opportunities to comment on the Fiscal Year 2023 Capital Renewal Plan and the district’s plan to issue these bonds at previous meetings of the Oversight Panel for School Facilities, Capital Funding Protection Committee, Debt Management Commission and Board of Trustees.
- CAS submitted the proposal for a third elementary school to “alleviate any future overcrowding of the surrounding schools.”
- WCSD staff representing Facilities, Capital Projects, Internal Audit, Finance, Academics and Legal departments conducted due diligence for the proposed expansion of this district-sponsored charter school.
